Sir John Fortescue, a prominent scholar of Greek and Latin, became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1589. Fortescue became wealthy through his office and connections to the Custom House. Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham (1536-1624) was an English admiral. He succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham in 1572, and was later created Earl of Nottingham in 1597.
